MWWF SENDS TEAM TO WORLD WATERSKI CHAMPIONSHIP IN RUSSIA

The Malaysian Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (MWWF) will be represented in a world waterski championship event for the first time in 8 years.

Their team comprising Malaysia's waterskiing sisters Phillipa Yoong, 33 and Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah, 8, will depart for Russia tomorrow to compete in the IWWF Waterski Championship which will be held in Dubna, a city, north of Moscow, from 18 - 24 July.

The last time Malaysia was represented in a world championship event in waterski was in 1993 when the waterski world championship was organised in Singapore.

The team manager accompanying the team to Russia is Hanifah Yoong who is also the father of the skiing siblings.

Hanifah said, "The MWWF committee had decided to enter Pipa and Aaliyah in the Worlds because being Malaysia's best hopes for gold medals in this year's SEA Games to be held in Palembang, Indonesia, they need the high level mental conditioning to assist them to achieve their tasks in Palembang in November,"

"The targets in Russia for Pipa and Aaliyah are to improve on their personal best scores under intense pressure competing amongst the best in the world." Hanifah added.

Phillipa or Pipa to her friends and family is entered in all the 3 events of women slalom, women tricks and women jump while Aaliyah who will have the honour to be the youngest competitor in Russia will only compete in her current pet event of tricks.

Pipa, Malaysian record holder in slalom and jump, is favoured to win golds in women slalom and women overall in the SEA Games while Aaliyah, Malaysian tricks record holder and currently the highest ranked South East Asian skier in the IWWF Asian ranking list for women tricks is the favourite to win gold in the 2011 SEA Games.

The trip to Russia for Phillipa is sponsored by Valser Engineering & Services S.B. while Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup S.B. is the sponsor for Aaliyah who celebrates her 8th birthday on the day the team leaves for Russia, the 16 July 2011.
