Sat, 2nd Oct 10 MALAYSIAN WATERSKI TEAM LEAVES FOR JAKARTA’S 2010 IWWF ASIAN AUSTRALASIAN OCEANIA CHAMPIONSHIP PHILLIPA YOONG TO PARTICIPATE IN 3 EVENTS & TARGETS SLALOM MEDAL Malaysia’s national waterski team comprising veteran Phillipa Yoong and three young skiers Hanis Azemi (11 yrs), Hadi Irfan Rahaizah (10) and Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah (7) will leave for Jakarta on Monday 04 October after winding up their training today and packed their skis at the MWWF national training centre in Putrajaya. Upper most on their minds would be to better their personal best scores which may result in a medal for Phillipa in the women slalom and top ten Asian ranking for the young skiers who have time on their side. Team manager, Azemi Jusoh, said at the team’s photo shoot today, “The colour of the medal the team is targeting will depend on how much Phillipa’s competitors from Japan, China and Korea have improved but Phillipa has been training extremely well in the past 3 weeks. Therefore a bronze is our minimum target.” Phillipa shall be competing in all the 3 events of women slalom, women tricks and women jump. “As for the junior members of the national team they are all going to their first ever international tournament since they started skiing less than 2 years ago. Although they are all competing against grown up athletes (and as such are at an extreme disadvantage) in the open tricks events they should be good for top 10 placings and if they do really well a top 5 is not out of their reach.” Azemi added. The Vice President of the Malaysian Waterski & Wakeboard Federation, Alex Yoong was there at Putrajaya to coach the national team in their final training sets. Alex gave the team a pep talk telling them, “It is enough to aim for personal best scores in Jakarta instead of focusing on the final results or placings. You have all been training well which means personal best scores will place you all high up there in the final placings.” Alex also thanked the sponsors Putrajaya Corporation, Ministry of Youth & Sports for their support. He said, “Putrajaya Corporation’s support and the city’s remarkable watersport facilities in the Water Sports Complex and Maritime Centre in Presint 5 have been instrumental in bringing our athletes to Asian level so rapidly. We also thank the Ministry of Youth & Sports as well as Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup Sdn. Bhd. which operate our training centre for their support.” The IWWF Asian Australasian Oceania Championship is a biennial event held in every even year with the 2010 edition scheduled in Jakarta’s Sunter Lake on 6th to 10th Oct .
