Tue, 12th Oct 10 MALAYSIA’S PHILLIPA YOONG WINS SILVER IN WOMEN OVERALL AND A BRONZE IN WOMEN SLALOM IN ASIAN WATERSKI CHAMPIONSHIP JUNIOR SKIERS AALIYAH AND HANIS IN WOMEN TRICKS TOP 10 WITH HADI IN MEN TRICKS TOP 15 Malaysia’s national waterski team comprising veteran Phillipa Yoong and three young skiers Hanis Azemi (11 yrs), Hadi Irfan Rahaizah (10) and Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah (7) returned from Jakarta’s 2010 Asian Australasian & Oceanian championships yesterday with impressive results. Phillipa stunned favorites emerging second in the women’s overall title for slalom, jump & tricks combined and snatched the women slalom bronze in the Asian championships while Malaysia’s very young skiers competing in the open events outside Malaysia for the first time impressed greatly with top 10 in women tricks and top 15 in men tricks. “I never expected the silver in overall although I stood a chance to fight for a podium place in slalom,” said an ecstatic Phillipa. “It is especially gratifying for me coming back to be near my prime when I was 18 after 13 years and 2 daughters.” She also said that “Our Malaysian Waterski & Wakeboard Federation’s development programme is working very well considering that the juniors who went and came back amongst the top 15 in Asia with personal best scores. This is the result of the fantastic support of Putrajaya Corporation, Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup Sdn. Bhd. and the Ministry of Youth & Sports Malaysia.” The next tournament the MWWF will be sending a team to the 2010 Olympic Council of Asia’s Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman to be held in December 8th to the 16th 2010. MWWF is still looking for the balance of funding for their airfares to send a team of 4 athletes and 2 officials to this major Games.
